The Avalon Project, supported by Yale University, houses a huge database of digital documents relevant to the fields of Law, History, Economics, Politics, Diplomacy and Government.  This site is highly recommended for research papers for both United States Government and American History courses.

BI was created in 1916 as a private nonprofit organization devoted to independent research and innovative public policy solutions.  Brookings's goal is to provide high-quality analysis and recommendations for decision-makers in the U.S. and abroad on the full range of challenges facing an increasingly interdependent world.

Cato Institute {www.cato.org}

Cato, which was founded in 1977, maintains traditional American principles of limited government, individual liberty, free markets and peace.  The institute is a think tank for study on public policy and holds to a Libertarian view which is often associated with Classical Liberalism.

 

Center for Democracy & Technology {www.cdt.org}

The CDT, founded in 1994, works to promote democratic values and constitutional liberties in the digital age. The center's focus is on law and policy in relation to global communications and technology, while promoting free expression and privacy in today's age of information.

 

Center for Economic & Policy Research {www.cepr.net}

CEPR conducts both professional research and public education oriented towards filling important gaps in the understanding of particular economic and social problems, or the impact of specific policies.

Founded in 1959 and named after Herbert Hoover, this think tank emulates the principles of individual, economic, and political freedom; private enterprise; and representative government, fundamental to the vision of the Institution's founder.


Howe Institute {www.cdhowe.org}

Founded in 1958 under the name, Private Planning Association of Canada, this Canadian think tank focuses its research on business, organized labor, associations, the professions, and interested individuals.  The name was later changed in 1961 to memorialize the Right Honourable Clarence Decatur Howe.  Keep in mind that Canada is a more Socialist system than the United States in economics and political thinking.

Founded in 1961 by a futurist, Herman Kahn, this think tank continues to maintain a future oriented approach to research.  Hudson sees the complexities within societies, and maintains a focus on the often-overlooked interplay among culture, demography, technology, markets, and political leadership.  Dedicated to innovative research and analysis that promotes global security, prosperity, and freedom, the Institute challenges conventional thinking and helps manage strategic transitions to the future through interdisciplinary and collaborative studies in defense, international relations, economics, culture, science, technology, and law.

The AILF was established in 1987 as a not-for-profit educational, charitable organization. The foundation is dedicated to increasing public understanding of immigration law and policy and the value of immigration to American society; to promoting public service and excellence in the practice of immigration law; and to advancing fundamental fairness and due process under the law for immigrants.

AI is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for universally recognized human rights.  AI’s mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination.  AI is a democratic, self-governing movement, independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion; and is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights.

The ICRC follows the Geneva Conventions of Humanitarian Law.  The first  international conference of the Red Cross was held in 1867 and since then the organization has grown into various branches globally, in defense of human rights concerning war, while staying neutral in all aspects of political ideology, economic interest, or religion.

 

Human Rights Watch (www.hrw.org}

HRW supports victims of discrimination, political oppression, inhumane conduct in wartime, and investigates and exposes human rights violations, holding abusers accountable.  The organization is an independent, nongovernmental organization, supported by contributions from private individuals and foundations worldwide. It accepts no government funds, directly or indirectly.

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation {www.history.org}

The Foundation operates the world’s largest living history museum in Williamsburg, Virginia, the restored 18th-century capital of Britain’s largest, wealthiest, and most populous outpost in the New World.  The 301-acre historic area maintains hundreds of restored, reconstructed, and historically furnished buildings. Costumed interpreters tell the stories of the men and women of the 18th-century city—black, white, and native American, slave, indentured, and free—and the challenges they faced.

DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, DC, is a volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children.

The IHA was founded in 1942 to pursue the creation of Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia.  Through its website, the association educates the public about the Revolutionary and Colonial eras of American history, as well as Philadelphia.

Established in 1968 by Coretta Scott King, The King Center is the official, living memorial dedicated to the advancement of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., leader of America’s greatest nonviolent movement for justice, equality and peace.

As a national archive devoted to educating people about the contributions of First Ladies and other notable women in history, this virtual library serves as a resource for patrons from school children to serious scholars. 

 

Tocqueville, Alexis de {www.tocqueville.org}

A C-SPAN supported site dedicated to the principles and democratic ideals of the aristocratic Frenchman who in 1831, at 25 years old, traveled through the US and later wrote the classic works Democracy in America.

The Valley of the Shadow site, supported by the University of Virginia, was compiled from newspaper archives from the Civil War period.  The site compares life in two counties, Augusta County, Virginia, and Franklin County, Pennsylvania.  Although close in proximity, the two areas were very different in culture and thinking.  Excellent site for any research in the Civil War period.
